North Cyprus Goes Digital: $100M Fiber Internet Deal Signed with Turkey
The future of internet in North Cyprus just got a whole lot faster.
In a groundbreaking move, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Republic of Turkey have signed the “Fiber Transformation Protocol,” launching a major national upgrade to the island’s fiber-optic infrastructure. This initiative promises to bring European-standard high-speed internet to homes and businesses throughout the TRNC.
Historic Agreement with Major Investment
The agreement was signed by TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, with President Ersin Tatar also present at the official ceremony held at the Concorde Tower in Nicosia. The event drew a large crowd of government officials, tech leaders, and industry stakeholders—including Turk Telekom CEO Ümit Önal and Turkish Ambassador Ali Murat Başçeri.
A Fast-Track to Modern Digital Infrastructure
The project will be executed under a build-operate-transfer model by Türk Telekom, in collaboration with the TRNC Department of Telecommunications. Completion is targeted within 12 months, and a separate cooperation protocol between Türk Telekom and the TRNC department will soon be finalized.
Türk Telekom CEO Ümit Önal, speaking at the event, emphasized the company’s 185-year legacy in telecommunications and its strategic vision to position Turkey—and by extension, North Cyprus—as a regional digital leader.
“We are ready to begin groundwork with the signing of this protocol,” said Önal, adding that extensive feasibility studies and planning have already been completed in partnership with TRNC authorities.
150,000 Households to Benefit from Fiber Internet
The scale of this project is nothing short of transformative. With a $100 million+ investment, the fiber network will reach 150,000 households—ushering in a new era of ultra-fast internet access for citizens, entrepreneurs, and institutions alike.
Önal also stressed Türk Telekom’s commitment to working collaboratively with all telecom operators and local stakeholders, ensuring that the benefits of the fiber rollout are shared across the entire digital ecosystem of the island.
A New Digital Chapter for North Cyprus
This protocol signals more than just faster internet—it marks a leap toward digital modernization, tech-driven economic growth, and stronger cooperation between Turkey and the TRNC.
With infrastructure development underway, North Cyprus is set to become a regional model for digital transformation in 2025 and beyond. northcyprusinvesting.com, Investra.io
