North Cyprus introduces a modern AI-powered traffic control system with video surveillance, automatic license plate recognition, and airport exit restrictions for unpaid fines. Full launch on August 16.
New Traffic Surveillance System in North Cyprus: Fines to Be Enforced Automatically From August 16
Erhan Arıklı, Minister of Public Works and Transport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has announced the implementation of a next-generation traffic control system designed to revolutionize road safety and law enforcement across the country.
The system is already in test mode and will become fully operational on August 16, marking a new chapter in automated traffic enforcement in North Cyprus.
🎥 What’s New: Video Surveillance Up to 1km Away
Unlike the older system that relied on static photo cameras, the new infrastructure uses high-resolution video surveillance capable of capturing violations from up to one kilometer away. This means drivers will no longer be able to slow down just before a checkpoint and avoid penalties — the new system sees it all.
🚗 AI-Driven Recognition Technology
In addition to video monitoring, the system features advanced software that automatically detects a vehicle’s:
- License plate
- Color
- Make and model
All this data is instantly sent to the central Holnet system, where violations are processed, and fines are issued automatically.
✈️ Rental Cars & Airport Restrictions
One major focus of the new system will be rental vehicles, often used by tourists. Minister Arıklı emphasized that if a traffic fine linked to a rental car is not paid, the driver will not be allowed to leave the TRNC via Ercan Airport. The system will block airport exit until the outstanding fine is cleared.
🧪 Trial Period Before Strict Enforcement
- The trial period is active until August 16.
- No fines will be issued from the new cameras during this time.
- Old cameras remain active and will continue to detect and fine violations as usual.
🚨 Serious Fines Coming Soon
Minister Arıklı warned:
“If you break the rules – you will be caught. And the fines will be quite serious.”
This initiative aims to boost driver discipline, lower accident rates, and make roads across North Cyprus safer for everyone — locals and tourists alike. northcyprusinvesting.com, Investra.io
