One of the best things about North Cyprus? Everything is relatively close. You can base yourself in one city and explore mountains, beaches, and ruins in under an hour’s drive. Here are some of the best scenic day trips by car:
Kyrenia to St. Hilarion Castle
A short drive into the mountains takes you to one of the most impressive medieval castles on the island. The road winds through pine forests and offers stunning sea views along the way.
Famagusta to Salamis and Karpaz Entry Point
Head north from Famagusta for a double hit of history and nature. First stop: Salamis Ruins. Then continue toward the start of the Karpaz Peninsula for unspoiled beaches and a quiet lunch by the sea.
Nicosia to Alevkaya Forest and Herbarium
Escape the city heat with a peaceful drive into the Five Finger Mountains. Alevkaya Forest offers shaded picnic spots, walking trails, and rare orchids in spring.
Kyrenia to Bellapais & Buffavento Castle
A relaxed loop starting at the charming village of Bellapais, followed by a more adventurous uphill drive to Buffavento Castle. The views from the top are well worth the effort.
Güzelyurt to Vouni Palace and Soli Ruins
Less visited but deeply atmospheric. This route takes you past citrus groves, to ancient palace ruins perched on cliffs, and to one of the earliest Christian basilicas in Cyprus.
Practical tips:
• Roads are generally quiet but narrow and winding in rural areas.
• Fill up your tank before heading out—remote areas have few petrol stations.
• Take snacks and water, especially outside tourist season.
North Cyprus is made for slow travel. With a car, a map, and a curious mindset, you’ll find magic around every corner.
